Program Details:
Why take your dog to a group class?
Our group classes are available for Positive Puppy, Basic Obedience and Advanced Obedience. Group classes are easily the "most cost effective” way to train your dog and also offer your dog the opportunity for extra socialization. When you join our group obedience classes, you will get the same information and skills you'll need to turn your pet into a polite companion. Emphasis is placed on teaching household manners and preventing/solving behavior problems using gentle, positive reinforcement and good management techniques. You and your dog will bond more closely as you work and play together as a team!
Private in home training sessions
Private sessions are usually best for dogs with certain kinds of behavioral problems that are related to fear and aggression. They also offer advantages for obedience training as extra attention can be structured around individual dog needs and allows most owner-dog teams to progress somewhat faster than they would in a group class. Finally, private lessons offer additional owner convenience as they are scheduled when you have time at your home.
The main disadvantages to private training is the additional cost and the fact that private lessons won't provide your dog with the extra socialization opportunities or distractions of working around other dogs that he/she would get in a class situation. However, you can still independently provide this type of experience for your dog by attending our Free Canine Campers Class at Lake Park every Sunday morning or by participating in a class at some future time.
Combination Classes
Can’t decide which is best for you? Why not get the best of both worlds? Florida Dog Training School now offers a unique option for your dog training need: Combination Classes. Our Combination Classes include full participation in one of our group classes as well as two in-home private training classes to help you with any particular problems you may be having in the home or can be used just to help you get a better handle on what you've learned in group class. This program is an extremey cost effective way of training your dog.
Details on our group classes
Positive Puppy
Positive Puppy is for puppies 8-18 weeks will help you raise a happy, well-mannered, and well-adjusted puppy. This course offers guidance with house training, crate training, tips on health care, and how to handle mouthing, nipping, jumping up, chewing, etc. We also begin teaching you and you pet basic obedience behaviors including Sit, Down, Stay, Come and Walk on a Leash without pulling. Puppy classes help provide your puppy with all important opportunities for supervised socialization. Socialization is the process of positive exposure to new experiences, situations, people of all ages and other animals. Tthe purpose is to enable your dog to develop the good coping skills that he needs to be a confident and happy traveler through life.
Although socialization should be a life-long process, research has proved that there is a vital window of time during a puppy's life when socialization is most critical to his development--that period occurs roughly between 4 and 12 weeks of age. During this period, puppies need to be able to play with other friendly dogs and puppies in order to properly develop their canine social skills. Being able to "read" other dogs and exchange communication signals with them is one of the keys to preventing dog-to-dog aggression later in life. Without this early contact with playmates, they are far more likely to grow up as fearful or aggressive adults. Positive Puppy classes are a great way to give them the chance to learn and practice the social skills they need in order to get along well with other dogs.
Basic Obedience
Basic Obedience classes are for dogs over 16 weeks old. These clasess will help you deepen the bond with your dog while teaching him the obedience behaviors and skills that he needs to be a better companion. This course will show you how to be leader of the pack and win your dog's respect, not through physical punishment but through exercising control of access to all the things dogs love, while rewarding good behavior. As you learn how to motivate and communicate with your dog, your dog will learn how to Sit politely for petting instead of jumping up, and to Stay, Come, Down and No. Solutions for pulling on a leash will also be addressed by using the Heel command.
Note: Positive Puppy & Basic Obedience may be held as separate or as combined classes. This is because the Positive Puppy & Basic Obedience class curriculum is very similar. The main difference between them is that in Puppy Class, the puppies are given some (supervised) off leash socialization time; therefore, when the classes are combined, there will be a 10-15 minute off leash socialization time for compatible pups to play following the end of class.
Advanced Obedience
Advanced Obedience for dogs over 16 weeks old is geared for owners who want to improve and expand their dog’s Positive Puppy/Basic Obedience foundation skills, or obtain better control over an unruly high-energy dog. Everything we do in Advanced Obedience will be geared toward fostering your dog's self-control and increasing your dog’s attention and deference to you. We work on off the leash training techniques. A prerequisite for Advanced Obedience is Basic Obedience or prior approval from the trainer.
How to Choose?
Do I need Basic Obedience or Advanced Obedience? Please don't assume that just because your dog can sit or stay for a short time that you should begin in Advanced. Unless you are experienced in how to use positive reinforcement to motivate your dog, and leadership/deference training to gain his respect and cooperation, you will definitely benefit from the guidance, coaching, and solid foundation that you as well as your dog will get in Basic Obedience. If you're not sure, our trainer can evaluate your dogs behavior and can help you determine what class will be best for you.
